Old Fashioned Apple Crisp or Apple Brown Betty
This apple delight is a favorite of my nephews….Vanilla ice cream always is piled on top…The oatmeal crumble on top is just divine….
Ingredients
- 5 pounds McIntosh Apples
- 1 grated zest orange
- 1 grated zest lemon
- 2 TBL Fresh squeezed orange juice
- 2 TBL Fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
Topping
- 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup light brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 cup oatmeal
- 1/2 lb cold diced unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.Butter a 9×14 baking dish.Peel,core ,and cut apples into large wedges.Combine apples with zests,juices,sugars,and spices.Pour into prepared dish.
- For TOPPING
- Combine flour,sugars,salt, and oatmeal and cold butter into a bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment.Mix on low speed until mixture is crumbly and butter is the size of peas.Scatter over apples.Place on sheet pan and bake for 1 hour until top is brown and bubbly.Serve with a whopper scoop of vanilla ice cream!
